Web designers as well as professional software consultants, like all other IT specialists, have to work hard as a team together with their clients. It’s the basis of a good business relationship and it guarantees a high quality end product at the finish line. When, for instance, the designer has planned the page and the client hasn’t prepared the content for it, it’s best not to out the page up with the ‘under construction’ sign but to have it done when the information it will be filled with is ready. The designer has to be flexible and not follow the wishes of a client blindly because sometimes these can work against the productivity of the website and its popularity with the users. If the client wants music in the background, high-res images and lots of media files the designer will be obliged to provide all this but he can give the user a choice in the matter by making it easy for the user to have the sound switched off, videos stop from loading or even offer a variant of the page for slow connections. This way everyone will be happy and the client will have his wishes fulfilled without sacrificing the good experience of users. The same may be said about sharepoint customization - the option the majority of clients aren’t aware of but this is essential because everyone wants to store and backup important information without any slightest chance of losing it.

Last time we talked about the don’ts of web design. A short blog entry wasn’t enough to even begin that big topic but let us continue at least on some important notes. It’s amazing how big companies that sell luxurious products costing huge amounts of money, have terrible websites. They are stylish and posh, they have elegant splash welcome pages and beautiful intros with classical music for soundtrack. They have a grand way of listing products and presenting them to the customer, but when it comes to functionality they are good for nothing. These sites have high pretentions but poor presentation. So here are some more don’ts and it doesn’t matter if you are making a site for a world-famous designer or a tiny shop. Don’t make internal links pop up into new windows. Let your visitors choose the way they want to view your pages. Don’t tolerate dead links and self-referential links on your page. Check your site for broken links once every few months. Don’t put up a site if it’s not ready. Pages with ‘Under Construction’ signs are a nuisance. They scream of amateurism and neglect. Get unfinished parts of your site ready and then make them live. Don’t use high-res images that waste your users’ loading time. Hire professional corporate web designers to help you with the idea. Keep those in mind, you’ll do fine.

You have to proclaim and filter ruthlessly e-mails that appear as spam and always report them. Also go through your contact lists and see if some of the contacts should also go to the trash folder. Delete emails you don’t need to reply to. Try not to check you e-mail too often. Chances are the more mail you get the more ruthless and organized you will be in deciding what’s in and what’s out. Check your e-mail once a day unless you are waiting for an important one. Try and make sure your mail client always shows you threads on the same topic.
